Girls of the World

Sometimes I Wish I Were a Boy by Lesley Gore from Growin' Up Too Fast: The Girl Group Anthology

Who hasn't wished that they were a boy? Even in the 1950s, people were confused about gender issues! Lesley puts in a fabulous vocal performance regarding what a girl can and can't do.

I Want You Back by Girl Talk from their 2002 "album" Secret Diary

Midwest glitcher Gregg Gillis takes sampling/resampling to the next level. A reworking of Lil' Romeo's "My Baby" chopped and horrified into submission. Of course, the original track contains a smoking Jackson Five sample which permeates this over-the-top remix. Jay-Z makes a guest appearance!

The Melbourne Shuffle by Michael Forshaw off "The Last Starfighter EP" from 2003.

There's no link directly to the piece of vinyl this comes from, because availability for cutting edge electronic dance music is complete shit. This is due to the total size of the addressable market. There's a whole rant here about how this keeps people from purchasing and enjoying music they really love, but I'll just skip it. You can hear (but not necessarily purchase) more of Mr. Forshaw's music at his website, linked above.

This particular track expresses an ultra-modern approach to romance and the act of physical love. Also a tweaking melody and low end to make the bass bins go bananas. I've often felt that anyone who gets why I love this track so would truly understand my musical taste. Hell.. fuck.. yeah.

Good selection. Loved the Girl Talk cut! Sounded like a more glitched-out version of Prefuse 73, sort of.

I listened to them in reverse order, though, so by the time I got to the Leslie Gore track I kept expecting it to suddenly spazz out and dissolve into cut-up digital distortion.
